I was a bit surprised to see Nikon announce a DX sensor compact camera today. I shoot both an FX and a DX sensor Nikon dSLR and have recently been looking for a compact camera that would still give me the ability to take good photos but be a bit more mobile than a big bulky SLR can be. I researched the new range of mirrorless cameras and it appears that Sony really has the best offering here, but I really didn’t want to buy a whole new system of lenses, etc. Nikon’s mirrorless system has a 1″ sensor instead of a DX sensor like Sony does, and has a few other flaws, so I decided I would just go with the Sony RX-100 compact since it has the same 1″ sensor, a bright lens and great reviews. Had I known that a few weeks later that Nikon was going to release a DX compact, I would have waited and purchased it instead. It would have worked with all of my flashes, had a larger sensor and overall fit much better with my post process workflow since I edit using Capture NX2 and it allows you to shoot in RAW NEF. It never crossed my mind that Nikon would go this direction since they seemed to be committed to the CX sensor in their mirrorless system, which you would have expected to be the sensor in their high end compacts as well. So although I’m excited to see this is the direction they chose (I personally think their mirrorless camera should have stuck with DX too), I’m disappointed that they remain so secretive with their future plans. In this case, they ended up losing my money that would have gladly gone to them had I known this camera was in the pipeline.
